Internship in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources

Office of State Archaeology - Underwater Archaeology Branch

In the summer of 2015, I had the opportunity to work with North Carolina's Underwater Archaeology Branch under the North Carolina State Govenment Internship Program. For 10 weeks, I worked full-time for the branch as their Digital Development & Conversion intern as well as a deckhand for numerous field research outings throughout the summer.

At the request of the branch's Director, John W. Morris III, I developed an Underwater Sites Database and a Terrestrial Sites Database for North Carolina's CAMA (Coastal Area Management Act) counties in ArcGIS and Google Earth to be used in research and to assist in environmental review publications. Along with these major projects, I was able to try my hands at many aspects of underwater archaeology, including diving on historic shipwreck sites. I am fortunate to have been awarded this opportunity and I am confident the skills I acquired will prove beneficial in future projects.
